It’s not really news that The Baltimore Sun’s subscription base has been bleeding out uncontrollably for the past few years and there’s nothing stopping it. Journalism is dead, blah blah blah. So they’ve done what several other publications have done and created a free, daily rag targeting a ‘younger crowd’.
I suppose what they mean by that is essentially people like myself or those ’emerging adults’ who enjoy spending there life’s hours on Myspace, Facebook and Perez Hilton.com. Even the name of the print “b” SCREAMS “Yes I recycle and love Project Runway. Who doesn’t?” See, the lower case “b” is saying, “Hey I’m pretty chill. I’m not all business and important issues like an upper case “B” might suggest. That’s not the kind of Baltimore I’m reppin’ dawgz. Check out this video of a dog puking on a kitten!”
Eh, I make fun but it’s a pretty good idea. Anything to make some money, get people reading for once. The only thing that burns my ass is that the aforementioned metromix.com is a website that my now roommate and I came up with literally four years ago but never had the willpower to create. We even sat down and started sketching it out one not-at-all-fabled evening. We never came up with a name for it, but apparently someone else did and is now making a nice living off of it. …crap.
I always enjoyed grabbing the Washington Post’s free ‘zine thingy before boarding the metro every morning.
Also, “Stuff White People Like” is freaking awesome.
Good to know the under armor crowd is represented.
Isn’t there already a short free paper (the Examiner) in Baltimore?
How will this get worked into the plot of the Wire?
Indeed, The Examiner was one of the links I nested in there. I read it pretty frequently online although it lacks in substance somewhat. To be expected for a daily I suppose.
GODDAMMIT
Wow, metromix kind of sucks, as the “hot spots” it covers is powerplant live and the Hammerjacks/Club One areas. Fed Hill and Canton are both excluded i think…
Well I kind of think the reason it sucks mostly is because it isn’t solely dedicated to Baltimore, although I really like the layout for the most part even though it gets pretty busy at times.
They have like 2-3 people running around taking pictures of people at the most popular venues and that’s about it. If (when?) I had such a website it would be a little more thorough with details and user feedback on all bars, big and little with CURRENT listings of specials etc. For instance, the Locust Point Neighborhood section has like 3 restaurants and 2 bars despite the fact that it’s a really small area to the point that keeping all of the listings would take minimal effort, but it’s totally incomplete.
Across all resources on the interwebs finding stuff Baltimore related is easy enough, but it’s not really the case with metromix.
