More Fun with Bad Reviews!

Since playing a game dedicated to guessing the bar/restaurant based on an easily searchable bad review isn’t gonna work, I figure why not post some of the best-worst reviews in the Baltimore area and enjoy them for their obtuseness! This one comes to us courtesy of Yelp, wherein a guy from New York says a bunch of stuff about The Wire and somehow manages to work trustafarians into his review of everyone’s favorite generically named bar, BAR (corner of Lancaster and S. Regester, Fells Point): Bar.  The name says it all.  That’s all it is.  It’s a bar.  They serve booze.  But it’s not just a bar.  It’s a dive bar.  But not the kitschy funny haha kind of dive bar that trustafarian hipster art school types like … Read entire article »

Review: Drive Angry

If you’re like me, you’ve seen the commercials on the telly for Drive Angry approximately 28 factorial times, and you probably think to yourself “yup, another shitty action movie starring shitty Nicholas Cage 4 Fast 12 Furious wannabe!” I definitely thought that, and quite fortunately I know better now; in fact, here’s a better way of showcasing the movie that puts the entire thing in a different light. Bear the 2 minute trailer and see if you agree: Seems pretty different from just another shitty Nicholas Cage Driving Cars and Shooting People movie, right? The devil’s involved? Some sort of cult? Well, you’re half right. Drive Angry is certainly not a “good movie” by any stretch of the imagination – its purile, over the top ridiculousness washing any any inkling that … Read entire article »

5 Points Tavern – the long road to victory

1120 E. Fort Avenue in Locust Point has been a bar for a very, very long time. Longer than I’ve been alive, longer than my parents have been alive, longer than ….you get the point. To the longest stretch of my memory, it went from being a bar called French Quarter – a dark, unsettling place where normal bar patrons should never go – to Aloha Tokyo, a poorly managed (both space and quality wise) attempt at a sushi/karaoke bar. Which, even in real estate-bubble era Locust Point didn’t really fit quite yet, alongside the failed Nasu Blanca and Luca’s, which has now reverted to something similar to its former Truman’s in Barracuda’s. Real estate lessons aside, last summer Aloha Tokyo came under new ownership and the long process of completely … Read entire article »

Review: Delia Foley’s Pub and Eatery

Since the shuttering of the seemingly notorious Taps some time ago – a bar known for not having Taps, owners getting into back alley brawls and pub crawl stabbings – an inordinate amount of interest has been generated regarding the future of the establishment, especially since Ropewalk manager Marc McFaul purchased the building and all associated licenses back in August. With a group of people seemingly knowing what they’re doing at the helm, Nü Taps went from Catherine’s Irish pub to Delia Foley’s Pub and Eatery (1439 South Charles St., Riverside) and opened as promised and on time this weekend, to a packed grand opening on Saturday. And boy howdy, the interior is very nicely polished. The cosmetic changes from the dingy interior of Taps are numerous. A new mural adorns the … Read entire article »

Tron: Legacy Review

I managed to somehow sneak into (and by that I mean walk straight through security without any questioning) the Tron: Legacy preview the other night, here’s my review. (contains minor plot spoilers, also crotch references) … Read entire article »
