And so it was this past weekend, just prior to celebrating our nation’s independence for the 237th or 8th time, I can’t remember, members of the Midnight Sons assembled and travailed our way to Dundalk’s Heritage Park to bear witness to the greatness that only the karaoke beer garden can provide. There’s some video complete with star wipes, and bear in mind most of this footage was taken well before 5pm and these folks were mostly hammered – no one got fighty-rowdy, it was actually a fun time and Styx played later that night (for $5, what a steal!). Took some crappy pictures with my phone, meanwhile actual photographer JM Giordano took some real ones which wound up as a bonus gallery on Baynard Wood’s’s’s column The City That Drinks (nice name Bay) over on City Paper’s site. Good stuff.
*EDIT: It should be noted that the guy in the gigantic America shirt goes by the name Tornado, and is a fantastic karaoke performer. But he no longer performs at The Drinkery unfortunately.
I kinda love the fact that the place where you could make a demo was next to the beer garden & the first aid tent 😉
Before I moved to Baltimore I worked in Dundalk and took part in the 4th of July Parade. I was holding a banner for Libertarian Candidate X a few years back. I had no idea just how long that damn parade was. It’s an all day affair. But I can’t think of anyplace in Baltimore more All-American the Dundalk. It’s always felt like home to me.
Holy shit! Styx played that night? I can’t imagine a better scene. Now I’m super bummed I missed it this year.
The music acts seem to get better every year. Two years ago (maybe three) it was Bowser from Sha Na Na, last year it was Eddie Money, now Joan Jett and Styx. Pretty awesome for $5 if you ask me.
