Super. Awesome. Haiku. Contest. – The winner is…

Welp, I received a whopping seven entries for our “essence of Harbor East” haiku contest, some via Twitter, email and commentary. Here are the ones I felt I could comment on.

@ginghamgrlva:

Look! Lights Burn Brightly
Here in Harbor East I Choose
To spend happy hours

Can’t disagree with this one bit. The happy hour at RA got my vote for City Paper’s BoB 2009, although technically I’m unaware of too many other happy hours in the area and can’t see how they could be any better.

@Spamspam:

FOOD IN HARBOR EAST
TASTES LIKE A KISS FROM A BABE,
AND NOT MUCH LIKE FEET

I for one don’t know what feet taste like so I’ll take your word on that Spammy. Usually I enjoy the kiss from a babe, unless of course you’re talking about Babe the pig, or a human babe that dips. In which case I would prefer a foot… Dammit this haiku is making me think too much!

@ppankl:

Harbor East is “new”
It was here when I got here
Maybe it will flood?

Well considering all of Fells Point and the inner harbor flooded only a few years ago, it’s entirely possible. Those’ll be some pissed off yuppies, I can tell you that.

Mike (via email):

Oh fountain of gold
what is it you are made of?
why do you exist?

Yeah last time I checked the fountain was a memorial to the Katyn Massacre. Thanks for playing!

@DanLGBT4MdDem:

Gunshots ring out West
Tourists and business flee East
High towers feel safe

Jaded, cynical, also very true (therefore I like it). When development on the west side started to show definitive signs of …not happening, Harbor East sprung up out of undeveloped brown field and parking lots within the span of four years and hasn’t stopped since. The Hook, a previously condemned chrome factory site, is even being developed at an incredibly rapid click as I type these letters. All of this taking place while currently the biggest accomplishment on the west side is the UM BioPark – nothing to sneeze at, but the surrounding areas that have been “up and coming” for the past 27 million years have shown little signs of sustainable growth – with the exception of some pre-fab “luxury townhomes” airlifted into the city and dropped over in Pigtown. The magical combination of room to grow, elevated crime on the west side and unfriendly business conditions (aside from huge biotech grants to the University) made it the obvious choice for developers – plus, rich people love being near the water!

Did this wall of text not reveal my tell?
Can you guess who won?
THAT’S RIGHT IT’S NOBODY BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA SUCKERS!!!!
Just kidding. Congratulations to @DanLGBT4MdDem for playing and winning! Have fun with that tea!!!
