Secret Girlfriend – not so secretly horrible

It’s not often that I feel strongly enough about a television product to elicit a comment by my mouth and fingers in typing form, but Comedy Central’s new show “Secret Girlfriend” has truly gotten my hackles up. See that banner? You already know this show sucks, right? Well. Wait, let me backtrack a bit. If you’ve never heard of Secret Girlfriend – and you’re lucky that you haven’t, the premise is this: It’s a zany, horny, beer soaked romp through the main character’s life as he tries to escape the clutches of his psycho ex-girlfriend (or is he ?), all while trying to secure the affections of the sporty, beer-loving, cute, understanding, and essentially perfect (aka essentially fictional) other girl, ALL WHILE HIS BROSEPHS COMMIT TOTALLY CRAZY ANTICS!!! Dammit Diane Rehm!

Ya know, don’t get me wrong, I normally don’t mind listening to Diane Rehm on my way to work, considering my commute is relatively short and I can endure her usually rather boring topics of conversation and mummy vocals. But damn, every so often I just get so irritated by the way she condescends to some guests she doesn’t agree with, interrupts people, interviews whimsical authors of plays about traveling wicker salesmen (probably), and more recently – well since the ’08 campaign began at least – her constant fellating of Barack Obama. It’s like every single topic, sentence, thought, syllable is directly filtered through some sort of Obama-lens – “How can I relate this discussion about three bean chili to Barack Obama?” This phenomenon perfectly illustrated itself the other day.
