Apparently a few months ago Howard’s (Delly) of Mount Vernon (900 C Cathedral St., Mount Vernon) had a bar installed as they expanded to an adjacent property, and now have a pretty sweet happy hour on their hands (5-8pm M-F). Howard’s is currently well known for their superawesome and affordable breakfast as well as their history of being a greasy spoon, which no longer seems to be the case, and now the public at large can add “pretty decent happy hour” to the list.
The aitch aitch features $3 rails, $5 martinis, $4.50 house wine and $2 domestics along with $5 small plate apps that run the app gamut from cheese fries and quesadillas to more upscale picks like mussels, shrimp cocktail and chicken satay (which I tried, very flavorful $$). The shining food item, however, would be Howard’s chicken wings, which are first smoked then fried much like Federal Hill’s (Riverside’s) Delia Foley’s and a few other places. The wings are fried to a crispy perfection, coupled with the smoked goodness and sauce, hellafine.
To make matters even more Xtreme, Howard’s also features an extensive outdoor patio in the rear, complete with seating (so does the front, if you enjoy sidewalk seats). A healthy amount of foliage makes the patio feel alive, making it the perfect place for a Sunday brunch or happy hour alike. And now that summer is days away, having a nice cool Anchor Steam out on the patio after work could be just what the doctor ordered. Check it out for sure.
Anybody else like Howard’s? Do tell.
one of the more underrated/unknown joints in mt. v. especially that patio. breakfast bonus points: you can add cheesy sausage grits to any meal for 1.50. and they’re glorious.
Turkey Reuben hot off the grill!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Really a great bar/restaurant. One of my favorites in both categories in all the city. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend it. Excellent service, great atmosphere, reasonably priced, and the food is simply superb!
The owner went BALLISTIC on us, yelling and accusing us of trying to “get one over” on him after his server provided horrible service!
Here’s what happened:
My fiance and I live right in Mt. Vernon and so have found ourselves having brunch at Howard’s from time to time. The last several times we’ve been there we’ve had serious issues with the service, but we continued to suck it up because we love having a place with outdoor tables where we can bring our dog for brunch on Sunday.
Sadly, that won’t be happening again. On Sunday, October 23, 2011 we brought our dog and met our daughter for brunch at Howard’s. We all ordered coffee and water, my daughter ordered a salad, but asked for some custom changes to it and, since Howard’s won’t sell a half-salad, she asked for half of it to be wrapped up to-go. The rest of us just ordered normal entrees.
There was about a 20 minute wait and then the server brought out the first salad. It was huge and clearly not what she asked for. The server realized this as he was on the way to the table, turned around and took it back to the kitchen. About another 20 minutes later, the server brought another FULL salad that was prepared incorrectly – in other words, it was NOT what she asked for. We discussed this at the table and determined since we’d already lost a significant amount of time, my daughter would go cancel the salad and ask for our entrees.
This is where it gets very nasty. Next thing we know a man comes tearing out of the restaurant, clearly furious, and begins yelling at us. Seriously, he was yelling and we were in total shock. I said “Are YOU the owner?”, to which he confirmed he is, in fact, the owner. So he’s yelling at us about how he’s not going to let anyone “get over on me”.
Turns out when my daughter went in with the salad to return it, the owner became enraged and first began yelling at my daughter inside. Once she came outside, he followed in order to continue his tirade.
I did not let the situation escalate into name calling, but I let the guy know in NO uncertain terms that the problem was CLEARLY the server’s fault and that beyond that it was ENTIRELY inappropriate for him to speak with customers this way. I told him there were many appropriate and diplomatic ways he could have handled the situation.
He could and should have come to our table to say he wanted to ensure we were having a pleasant meal and ask what the problem was with the salad. At this point he would have realized that it was indeed his server’s fault and not a case of a customer trying to “get one over” on him. I also let him know that he turned a situation where he had regular customers who gave his restaurant good word of mouth into a situation where he was going to get very negative reviews and has lost our family as customers for good. We’ll never again tell a friend or tourist to eat at Howard’s. Period.
Ordering a custom half a salad and wrapping the other half? Where did your daughter think she was, the Waldorf????? Good, don’t come back and keep any friends of yours like you AWAY! It’s just a place to eat and drink and be friendly. Not a weight watchers specialty restaurant. You clearly belong in the county, though I don’t know which one would have you. Pikesville???
Wow, I can’t believe they had to toss your daughter’s salad — twice!
