Another one bites the dust: Bill’s Lighthouse Inn sold

Signaling the further death-knell of working class enclaves in South Baltimore, Bill’s Lighthouse Inn (1741 Light Street, Riverside), the storied and longstanding neighborhood bar has been sold to a group known as Velocity Cafe. Bill’s went up for auction in December, but owner Adele Wedemeyer rejected the $475,000 bid for the sizable property, opting to go the Craigslist route and hope for more money. And it would seem the tactic paid off, with the new owners soon taking over the bar/restaurant, liquor license, furnishings and application for outdoor seating – plus that cute little lighthouse on the awning. According to the internet, Cafe Velocity was a neighborhood coffee shop in Santa Monica that closed recently, a far cry in premise and execution from a restaurant known primarily for its crab cakes and … Read entire article »

The Double Grenade invades Baltimore, is horrible

Filed under “things that should definitely not exist,” about a month or so ago the Internet spawned a horrific alcoholic catastrophe known as the Double Grenade (also dubbed the Inception Grenade), a shot of Jameson coupled with a Jager Bomb end with a dumping of Blue Curacao into a pitcher of Red Bull and Vodka. The shots and mixers may vary – the one pictured actually also includes Red Stag and additional Jager – but … Read entire article »

Enjoy! 1. BRUNCH SABOTAGE A fairly basic strategy: head to your favorite brunch establishment – preferably something with an all you can drink Mimosa/Bloody Mary plan – and enjoy a delicious meal while … Read entire article »

Review: Delia Foley’s Pub and Eatery

Since the shuttering of the seemingly notorious Taps some time ago – a bar known for not having Taps, owners getting into back alley brawls and pub crawl stabbings – an inordinate amount of interest has been generated regarding the future of the establishment, especially since Ropewalk manager Marc McFaul purchased the building and all associated licenses back in August. With a group of people seemingly knowing what they’re doing at the helm, Nü Taps went from Catherine’s Irish pub to Delia Foley’s Pub and Eatery (1439 South Charles St., Riverside) and opened as promised and on time this weekend, to a packed grand opening on Saturday. And boy howdy, the interior is very nicely polished. The cosmetic changes from the dingy interior of Taps are numerous. A new mural adorns the … Read entire article »

The bars that are sorta similar to one another FACEOFF

A short while ago, some B’sOAM and I were discussing some bars that we used to frequent that, for all intents and purposes, were basically interchangeable. Sort of. For instance, Friends (before it was a goddamn sushi restaurant) and Dougherty’s (223 West Chase St., Mt. Vernon) were pretty much the same place; kinda open, kinda usually empty, kinda aloof service. But we could never decide which one was better, for one reason or another, maybe because to us they were pretty much equal. And then we started getting into bars that were *sort of* similar, but different in certain ways. And while these locales may be somewhat interchangeable and better or worse for certain reasons, we could never agree, overall, which place is superior. Which brings us to the “similar but … Read entire article »
