Say hello to your Purple Route bar crawl

Say hello to your Purple Route bar crawl

You know what’s really fun? Riding free buses paid for by parking fees and taxes! You know what’s even more fun than that? Using said free public transportation to grant patronage to ten or so bars/restaurants along its route! And so debuts the CCC Purple Route Bar Crawl, specifically designed to be performed on a Saturday afternoon-ish with super inexpensive drink specials at almost every location. Speaking of locations, here are the bars along the … Read entire article »

The bars that are sorta similar to one another FACEOFF

A short while ago, some B’sOAM and I were discussing some bars that we used to frequent that, for all intents and purposes, were basically interchangeable. Sort of. For instance, Friends (before it was a goddamn sushi restaurant) and Dougherty’s (223 West Chase St., Mt. Vernon) were pretty much the same place; kinda open, kinda usually empty, kinda aloof service. But we could never decide which one was better, for one reason or another, maybe because to us they were pretty much equal. And then we started getting into bars that were *sort of* similar, but different in certain ways. And while these locales may be somewhat interchangeable and better or worse for certain reasons, we could never agree, overall, which place is superior. Which brings us to the “similar but … Read entire article »

Grumpies Pour House to expand into old Federal Hill Lounge space

You may have missed this little gem amongst the maelstrom of usual internet yammering last week, but after some mild postponement the fine owners of Grumpies Pour House (25 East Cross St., Federal Hill), also owners of several other area bars, have received approval from the liquor board to expand their operation into the often and long-since defunct Federal Hill Lounge, which sits right next door. Grumpies has always been one of the more underrated bars in the area, in my humble opinion – with a $2 draft happy hour that runs from 6-10pm, and a crowd that never gets too crowded, you can always start a Friday evening off right there. Hopefully with a proper redesign and update, the additional space can keep them going strong for years to come. … Read entire article »

Get Down to The Get Down

The official reviews are in, but it bears repeating: The Get Down (701 S. Bond St., Fells Point) is a great club, and it’s most likely here to stay. With a large amount of floor space to work with, an affordable drink list, and a decidedly mixed crowd in attendance, it carries the perfect vibe and approachability for Baltimore’s more discerning “anti-a-taste-of-Miami/DC/New York” set. I spent a good long while at The Get Down for their grand opening this past Saturday and for the better part of two hours stared at their myriad of murals, light shows and hand-blown light bulbs (what?), featured in “The Edison Room.” If for no other reason in this world, you absolutely must hit up The Get Down and stare at their two story LED wall … Read entire article »

Key West Tales Vol. 1 – Grand Vin

So last week I was in Key West, FL doing a little vacationing and visiting. I spent much of my time there with locals who work/own/operate businesses in the area, and was fortunate to get a taste of the non-cruise ship atmospheres and locations around town. And I’m going to tell you about them. Enjoy! If you’re in Key West and say, over the age of 25, and you’re looking for a supreme place to hang out where the locals do – from business owners to rich people to prominent judges and their dogs – head to Grand Vin (1107 Duvall St.). Vin boasts a serious selection of wines/imported beers and an atmosphere akin to Idle Hour (201 E. Fort Avenue, Riverside) here in Baltimore, but with 100% less techno music. … Read entire article »
