If you’re like me (male, ruggedly handsome), you might have a tough time getting to sleep at night if you’re in a setting that contains an overwhelming amount of silence. Every single little noise, whether it be a floorboard creaking or a truck exploding, will either roust you from almost-sleep or just plain prevent sleep from coming to you at all. If you’re like me, you need a bit of repetitive white noise to help drown out those little sounds and get you some much needed rest. While on vacation last week I found myself in that situation; sleeping in an unfamiliar room, with no box fan (white noise of choice) to sooth the ears.
| Fortunately, the internet knows how to fix everything. After 2 minutes of thorough Googling I came across Simply Noise, a handy dandy little java-based slide bar with which you can control the type and intensity of some sweet, sweet white noise. Its variety of white noise is most akin to television static, but at its softest just kind of sounds like a small jet of air. It definitely did the trick for me while on vacation, and it’s also great for drowning out idiot coworkers! |
So check it out, and get some rest people. Now if they could only make a “babbling brook” or “box fan” setting…

Yep. Hard to sleep without sirens and helicopters outside the window…
I found that site a while ago, and I’ve often found that the brown (no, not that one)/pink noise is the most relaxing. It doesn’t drown out as much sound as the white noise, because the range of the noise is not infinite, but the brown/pink noise, with its smaller range, tends to land right around where natural sounds (e.g., rain/ocean/leaves rustling in the wind) do. Also, unlike another website I found (http://www.soundsleeping.com/) and any “nature CDs,” SimplyNoise doesn’t just use a looped recording, but rather a uniform static, so in that respect it’s not as distracting for sleep. But then, I tend to use it in the drown-out-coworkers capacity, and not to aid sleep.
Also, there were guys working on the train tracks outside of my house until late last night. If not for being completely exhausted, I’m sure that would have been irritating.
