platform wars

by muke on Feb.09, 2008, under Entertainment, Technology

Every gaming site covers the platform wars between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Usually, the PS3 and Wii kill the Xbox in sales. But everyone I know has, or wants to buy, an Xbox. So, where’s the disconnect?

In other xbox musings, is there any thoughts on MS Messenger within Xbox? I went ahead and enabled mine, but I’ve never used it before. In addition, I added the account under my all-in-one chat program (PC/Mac), which might make it easier to monitor and chat with everyone online for those who are wont to do such things. But as Gatsum points out, I’m the only one who doesn’t see everyone else almost constantly. Absence makes the heart grow less annoyed as they say.

The Wii is killing them both in sales because it’s cheaper and it appeals to people who don’t normally play video games like girls and old people. Nintendo also has incredible first-party developers that make platform-specific games. The PS3 isn’t outselling 360 in the US yet, EA just thinks that it will next year and it likely will if you consider that most everyone you know already has a 360 and isn’t likely to purchase another one (unless it breaks out of warranty). Probably the main thing driving the speculation is the death of HD-DVD, which makes the PS3 an inexpensive player for the soon-to-be-standard Hi-Def disk format. Also, apparently IBM has migrated the PS3′s Cell processor to a 45nm process, which will make them cheaper to produce, easier to cool and smaller. As for the games (where the PS3 is currently lacking), well, if the PS3 becomes dominant, game studios will follow, but the 360 already has a huge installed base in the US so it’s not like it’s going to be abandoned.
MS Messenger in Xbox is pretty useless if you don’t have the keypad attachment for your controller. It would be a pain to use the controller to type messages. But with the attachment, I could see using it.

the idea with Messenger was that I (or mike or whoever) could see from a quick glance at their buddy list who is on xbl.
